Steve Kahn’s large door and window panels read, on the gallery wall, as abstract fields with no possibility of entry, whether through the closed doors or the supposed windows. Door/Window #3, 1978, and other works in the series are collages on a monumental scale which, for all their precision of rendering, resist interpretation as either openings on the world or facsimiles of their subjects.
