As a teacher at California State University, Northridge, Jerry McMillan has had an important influence on a generation of artists, including Gary Burns, Lou Brown DiGiulio and Susan Haller. His photographic conundrums—metal works of precisely proportional detail, both sculptural and flat; a three-dimensional construction made from two-dimensional, illusionistic renderings of three-dimensional materials—not only question our assumptions but aggressively attack them.

McMillan’s work, in the words of one critic, “exemplifies the conflict and enigmatic quality of realism versus reality.”¹
