Jack Butler is probably best known for a series of distressed appropriations (Excitable Pages, 1978-1981) that point up the implicit violence in fashion advertising. Shortly before beginning the Excitable Pages, however, he completed a small series of onanistic fantasies he calls Sex 70s. The Sex 70s series, produced in 1978, marks the beginning of a career-long attention to the mass print media and its undercurrent of titillation and simulated gratification.
