Barbara Kasten is best known today for her color-drenched photographs of architecture, but she trained as a fiber artist. The untitled work from 1975 shown here clearly derives from her earlier interest, though it also draws upon the work of minimal painters she admires such as Robert Ryman and Ad Reinhardt. As a photograph, though, the work cannot escape its ties to its source: even as a barely visible field it remains, resolutely, an image.
